Spring / Summer ’18 Interior Design Cheat Sheet

Fashions come and go in interior design just as with clothes. Of course we purchase new attire more often than we decorate the living room.

What is the worst that can happen if you make a mistake with a top you bought? Not a great deal; you can always get a refund and wear something else. Not so simple to dispense with your home improvement.

If you decide that, after all your hard work, your new living room is not standing up to your own inspection, you will need to grin and bear it for another year or two.

It’s with this in mind that we feel it’s worth knowing what trends are out there so you don’t end up picking the wrong one.

Here, we have summarised what exactly is going on in the world of home interiors so you can get a head start with your research.

Themes

There really is something for everyone. Do you prefer vintage over minimalism? Go for it. Themes this year are diverse and will appeal to all personality types.

  • Bright pastels are taking over for child’s playroom feel, so pinks and yellows are welcome newcomers to paint palettes.
  • Bright blocks and more subtle pops of vibrant hues are en vogue, reminiscent of Paul Smith’s iconic striped branding.
  • Go organic with lighter pastels paired with leaf green, or mix and match all manner of blues to create a seaside resort look.
  • If you are determined to bring the outdoors inside, then you have the green light to create a tropical jungle.
  • For the wow factor, include an electric contrast in your living space: think dark walls with dazzling metallic furnishings.

Colours

Colour schemes are ranging from bright candy floss tints such as yellows, pinks, purples and oranges, to palettes featuring solely blues.

If you feel audacious, splashes of an unlimited selection of colours are all the rage, while for a simpler, more manageable but equally daring contrast, dark blue or black walls match perfectly with oranges, golds and brass.

For those wild at heart, there is no such thing as too much green, especially if it’s living.

Wallpaper & Paint

You can take your pick as far as paint is concerned. Be bold with dark feature walls to stage brighter finishing pieces. Create colour blocks in thick stripes, layer stencilled patterns or opt for subtle ombre hues graduating from light to dark.

Furniture & Accessories

Now it’s time to make your canvas a home. Incorporate one or two of these ideas for the perfect finishing touches:

  • Add natural dark woods and metallic signature pieces such as a pendant or a lamp.
  • Punctuate your space with fabrics and soft furnishings, for example cushions, rugs and throws.
  • Go crazy with patterned prints, feathers and even invest in a macramé knotted style wall hanging.
  • Finally, if you turned your living room into a greenhouse, it wouldn’t be too much this season. Plants are your best accessories, so go wild!

Are these themes a  dramatic departure from your current décor? Don’t throw your old furniture items away. Fashions come around in cycles, so keep hold of your cushions, lamps and cabinets. We can even store them here at Rent A Space.
