A guide to organising self storage

Making the most of your self storage space

There are many benefits to storing your items at an alternative site. It can help free up space and reduce clutter around the home, protect your items during a renovation or just leave you with a bit of extra breathing space. However, along with all the excitement of de-cluttering you may fall into the trap of packing your possessions in a nonchalant manner leading to a cluttered and unorganised storage space. At Rent a Space we want to help our customers get the most out of their storage space so here is some handy tips on how to organise and prepare your possessions for self-storage.

Think about the box

To start, assess the way you are going to store your items. If your pre-used storage boxes are looking a little worse for wear you may want to consider purchasing some new storage boxes in a size to suit your needs. Our double sided boxes will ensure that if they are stacked they are less likely to collapse and reduce the risk of items falling out and becoming damaged when being moved around.

Think inside the box

When packing up your items categorisation is key. A few examples of how you can sort your possessions are by family member, room, item size or activity – which one you choose is your personal preference.

Pack boxes so that heavy items are at the bottom and smaller items are at the top. Make sure that valuable and delicate items have padding around them so the risk of damage is reduced.

Think outside the box

Labelling your containers with relevant words such as “kitchenware” “sports equipment” or “books” can help you locate the item that you are looking for more efficiently.

Position your boxes in a logical fashion. Store items that you will need to access more frequently at the front of your self-storage unit and items you may not need for a while towards the back. When stacking or organising your possessions leave a walkway so that you can easily access all items without having to move heavy items around to get to something else. Storing/stacking items vertically can help maximise floor space but ensure you always lift items correctly and safely to avoid injury.

Make a plan of your storage unit. Sketch a rough plan of what is where to help you access items quicker in the future. Making an inventory list is also helpful so you are aware of exactly what is in your storage unit and where it is located.

Following these tips can help you towards stress free self storage and quicker access to your possessions. Contact our Rent A Space facilities in Shrewsbury to find out how we can help you get organised!
