Your Autumn / Winter Interior Design Cheat Sheet

Your Autumn / Winter Interior Design Cheat Sheet

It seems as if only five minutes ago we were writing our Spring/Summer Interior Design Cheat Sheet.

Yet it’s now the time of year we look forward to something cosier as we prepare for winter hibernation. Okay, we’re not quite there yet, but it’s fair to say colours are more muted, a little warmer in certain themes, and décor is definitely a lot more “hyggelig.” There are elements of “folk” in there as well as natural, lighter woods being de rigueur.

We love you to love your home that bit more, so we’ve brought together a summary of the trends you should be looking out for this autumn if your living space is due a refresh.

So what have we got for you this time?

THEMES

Lucky there are so many themes to choose from. Who would want the same dining room as the neighbours? Whatever your taste, from low key to extravagant, you are bound to feel at home in late 2018.

  • Florals are more illustrated than alive on the shelves this time, with potential for arty murals.
  • We’re glad to see hygge,” Danish cosiness, is firmly on the agenda with a muted colour palette.
  • Continuing on from our Scandi theme, “Scandi vintage” has been mooted as a possible modernisation on the effortless minimalism associated with northern European décor. Vintage in that nostalgic trinkets are being given pride of place amongst the signature clean look.
  • Artisan folk is another trend you may observe in the coming season. So what is that all about? It seems to celebrate a combination of cosy textures and hints of colour as well as eschewing minimalism.
  • Traditional warm and rich jewel colours are making a comeback with statement furniture items to boot.
  • Neutral woods and dramatic metals will be adorning everyone’s kitchens and dining rooms, so keep a look out.

COLOURS

There are precious few things that add more colour to your life than…well, colour. And we’re not going to disappoint.

  • There’s a palette for every taste, Whether it’s loud jewel colours, toned down pinks or mostly neutrals, the choice is yours.
  • Gold – Metal has always been a great way to accent pieces, but in autumn you can take it as far as you dare, using it for walls, carpets or wherever.
  • Black – This season you can indulge your dark side with black furnishings and light fittings, so what are you afraid of?
  • Still in love with the colour blocking and the pops of colour? Do not despair, you can splash the bright primary and secondary colour patterns around.

WALLPAPER & PAINT

Just like in summer, go wild with feature walls or murals, add some geometric stencilling onto a dark wall in a contrast colour such as gold, or opt for all the shades of pink for a colour-block effect. See colours for more ideas!

FURNITURE & ACCESSORIES

Now for the fun bit: accessorising. This will naturally depend on your theme, so choose according to that.

  • For a vintage feel, consider some retro items, metal tins and old-fashioned clocks.
  • Metallic pendants are a hit in most situations, so now is no different. Think black for a gothic look or go for gold! Feeling daring? How about a patina finish
  • Colourful cushions with an array of exciting prints for throws, rugs and other soft furnishings will lift you out of any winter blues.
  • If artisan folk or modern hygge inspire you, then think of luscious faux fur rugs.

If you love following interior decor trends and don’t know what to do with your old furniture, why not keep them in storage so you’ve still got them next time they are in fashion?
