Why You Can’t Afford Not to Have Self-Storage Insurance

At Rent A Space, people come to us asking lots of questions about self-storage insurance, and why it’s necessary for our customers.

We understand that paying out more money on top of your rent can seem daunting. Yet we firmly believe that the alternative is far more damaging to your finances, not to mention upsetting.

Here, we address some of the objections we come across regarding self-storage insurance so you have all the facts to hand.

Myth 1: It is expensive.

Not really. It actually works out around £1.12 per week for every thousand-pound’s worth of goods you have in storage.

That works out about the same price as a packet of luxury crisps, or a bottle of water.
How often do you purchase these items? Some people will buy at least one of these products daily. How much is a soft drink or a packet of crisps worth to you compared to expensive furniture or sentimental keepsakes?

Myth 2: My home insurance will cover my storage unit contents.

You need to take out another insurance policy to cover anything in storage. Most self storage companies will not accept your items until you have one, unless your insurance provider confirms cover whilst in storage.

Myth 3: My storage company is responsible for my items. They have high-tech security systems, so that is enough to keep everything safe.

According to the Self-Storage Association, you are still responsible for your items even if they are on our premises.

We do our utmost to keep your items secure with advanced 24-hour monitoring and surveillance with each unit being individually alarmed. However, we cannot guarantee against natural disasters and other things that might go wrong.

Even if you have a high-tech alarm system at home, your house contents will still need to be insured. You wouldn’t risk a break-in at home, so why risk it with us?

The biggest reason for taking out an insurance policy is to give you peace of mind. If something were to become damaged, it is a lot more expensive to replace your items than it is to pay a small amount to cover everything.

Self storage insurance protects your possessions in the event of earthquakes, fires, water damage, collisions, riots, theft and much more.

While Self Storage Insurance covers most things individually up to the value of your choice, there are certain items that will not be protected, for example money or other currency, so make sure you know what to keep with us.

You can take out a policy with any insurer you like, but Rent A Space also offers insurance at our facilities. To find out more about Self Storage Insurance, please get in touch with one of our helpful storage experts.
