Decluttering During Lockdown? Here’s How To Get Started

Decluttering may be something you’ve been intending to do for a while. The only thing that can be described as minimal so far is the results you’ve been getting.

Despite a library of books on the topic, you’re no nearer to having accomplished this feat. And now, you’re in lockdown, suddenly aware of all the mess you’ve racked up over the years, and there’s no getting away from it.

Now you know what it truly means to live in your home! And work, and exercise (or try to!) and play. Oh, and home school, of course.

With that in mind, how do you begin to clear the decks and make your house a home?

Here are a handful of tips to get you started:

Change your mindset

We all know we would feel a lot better if we had calmer surroundings. There is something to that adage that your possessions end up owning you. Too many belongings mean you don’t have the physical room or mental space to do what you really want. You end up trapped and unhappy.

Yet, we see the gargantuan task intimidating and therefore never want to start. The longer we leave it, the more clutter builds up and the worse the impending task seems.

Instead of thinking of it as a big chore, think of it as a present to yourself that you can enjoy later. Take heart in all the wonderful experiences you will have in your new surroundings once everything is clear. And remember you will be able to enjoy your hobbies once again.

Break everything up into sections and make a plan

Start by dividing everything up into categories: clothes, DVDs/CDs, books, paper etc. You decide how best to categorise your items. Make a plan for which order you will do them in and set a date for each one. Keep checking in with your calendar to make sure you’re on track. If you get a little behind, that’s okay. Just amend the dates and carry on.

Work through the sections little by little

Don’t attempt to do an entire room in a day or even a whole chest of drawers. Keep it small and do a drawer or box at a time so you don’t become overwhelmed and end up living in even more chaos than when you started. With each completed section, you will feel a sense of achievement that will motivate you to keep on going.

Keep only the things which bring you joy or have a use

It’s miserable being surrounded by items that bring back uncomfortable memories or look like piles of failure, so anything that makes you feel negative in any way, remove and make room for good things. Some things you have perhaps kept hold of because someone else wanted you to have them, but it’s not really your style. In that case, it’s time to say “Thank you and goodbye!”.

If you have items you need but have no room for, consider self-storage

If you’ve still got too many things taking up valuable room in your home, then why not enquire into self-storage? With access to your things whenever you want, state-of-the-art security and well-insulated storage units, you can rest assured your belongings will be safe with us.

Can I store my belongings during lockdown?

Rent A Space is open for business and able to move customers in safely with no physical contact with staff members. Access is via a keycode and you can come and go as you please once you’ve moved your belongings in. We’re cleaning our premises daily with special attention to surfaces that get handled on a regular basis. Also, you can wear gloves and use hand sanitiser to feel safer. Please do not come into the facility if you’re feeling in any way unwell as this could be putting other customers and our staff at risk. Stay home and follow government guidelines to self-isolate.
